Ecuadorian Currency And Carrying Cash In The Galapagos

When traveling to the Galapagos, or any Ecuadorian province, the on thing you won't have to prepare forsave a difference in culture and customsis changing out currency.

Since 2000, the United States Dollar (USD) has been the official note and coin for the entire country. That's not to say that the since-replaced Sucre is illegal tender in those parts but, instead, that the two can be used interchangeably, and are even the same denominations and sizes. And although British Pounds (GBP) can be swapped out at a few places, the most common bit of advice for those who visit the Galapagos is to opt for the 2 prominent currencies and an American Express.

ATM usage is few and fare between. While some cities may be teeming with them (which is generally not the case), others could have only one or twoboth of which may or may not work.

The smartest and most precautionary measures to take when dealing with money in Ecuador or the Galapagos is to carry only cash in denominations lower that 100 and an American Express, all in a money belt or ouch to thwart away the would-be pickpockets.

Ecuador and its provinces are just like any other foreign destinations, and the appropriate measures should be taken to prevent disaster.
