The Camping Checklist - 16 Important Camping Tips
Going Camping? Be Prepared with the Right Equipment
If it has been a while since youve been camping, there are some important things you should know about packing the right equipment. Weather can change in an instant and situations can pop up without any warning. Having a checklist for your packing needs is a wise idea. This way, you can be sure you have everything you need to enjoy your camping excursion whether you are camping for a night or over several days.
The Prepared Campers Packing List
1. The tent or tents
Size: It is always better to have a tent that is bigger than you need than to have one that is too small - especially if you are camping for more than one night. Additional tents may be advisable.
Material: Make sure your tents are waterproof. If your tent isnt waterproof, make sure you have a rain flap - an extra protector that goes over your tent. It should extend beyond your tent by at least a couple of feet and be anchored down with strong stakes.
Stakes, poles and ropes: These come included with tents when you purchase them. Make sure your package is not missing any poles or stakes
2. Hammer or Pry Bar
3. Hand saw - for wood gathering
4. Sleeping Bags - Check to be sure that every zipper is fully functional and that your sleeping bags are free of rips and tears.
5. Pillows - Bring at least one pillow for each person
6. Clothing - Even if you are only camping for one night, pack as though you are camping for two nights. An extra set of clothes (including the unmentionables) for the day and the night is recommended. Accidents happen and it can be miserable to be stuck in muddy or wet clothing for the duration of your stay. Make sure you have clothes for warm weather as well as cold weather. Bring an extra pair of shoes and socks for each camper as well.
7. First Aid Kit - This should have bandages for every size of wound as well as gauze and tape. Make sure your kit contains topical antibiotic ointment, sterilized wipes and plenty of medicine for aches and pains as well as stomach ailments. Calamine lotion for insect bites and run-ins with poisonous plants. Aloe vera for sunburns. Dont forget scissors!
8. Fire Starting Materials - If you know how to start a fire with sticks, thats great. Most people cant do that and even those that can sometimes have a hard time getting a fire going in that manner. Always bring along plenty of matches and paper for getting a fire started. Many like to be prepared with a lighter and fire starter fluid as well. Make sure to keep these packed away where children cannot easily find them.
9. Flashlights - One for each person
10. Two Way Radios - This is possibly the smartest equipment you can have. People do get along without them but they have also been known to save lives. Each camper should have one on their person at all times and should understand how to use it.
11. Extra batteries for flashlights and 2-way radios
12. Insect repellant
13. Eating supplies: Cooler containing ice, food and beverages, a grate for the fire, pots, pans and utensils
14. Extra water. Make sure you have a couple gallons more than you expect to need. Every person should have a bottle of water with them when going hiking or leaving the rest of the party for any reason.
15. Sun protection - Sunscreen lotion, hats and sunglasses
16. Toilet paper - Very important
One last thing: Don't forget to tell someone where you will be camping and where you plan to walk if you will be hiking. This is important for your safety!
