Why Not Go To Bavaria ... The Castles Are Magnificent!

A stay in Hohenschwangau, Germany (Bavaria ) is wonderful! The 2 hour drive there from Mnchen (Munich) is really nice but thank god for the newest little driving gadget the Tomtom (road navigator). Without that little beauty it would be near impossible to have find the destinations. As you wind through the Bavarian countryside along their very narrow roads the mountains soon come into view along with some of the most beautifully aqua coloured lakes you'd ever see.

Situated between these lakes is the little village of Hohenschwangau, home to two spectacular castles - Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein (*schloss means castle). Both castles were built in the 1800s, the first castle to be built was Schloss Hohenschwangau by King Maximilian and the other Schloss Neuschwanstein by King Ludwig II (his son). Both are pretty impressive but one more than the other -Schloss Neuschwanstein made quite an impression to Walt Disney so he based the Disney castle on this one.

There is one other castle that was built by King Ludwig II near Ettal in Southern Bavaria. This castle was built quite a bit smaller than the other two but by far the most magnificent, especially inside. Each room was adorned in gold leaf, exquisitely carved statues, rich fabrics and of course lots of fabulous art depicting the life and times of those days. The gardens surrounding this castle are also very impressive, it holds probably the largest arbour weve ever seen (maybe 250m) and a homemade Grotto.

Of course another attraction in Bavaria is the beer and theres certainly no shortage of that or willing participants! The food is okay as long as you like tonnes of salt in your dishes and copious amounts of sausage and sauerkraut ....mmmm...salt...thirst...beer?!
