A Shopaholics Guide To What To Buy On Italys Amalfi Coast

Fashion
The unique designs fashioned by Positano moda have recently gained recognition not just in Italy but all over the world. The designs use high quality fabrics and are peppered with innovative hand-embroidery coupled with tailored seams that defy traditional lines.
Leather sandals are also a local find, and many of the local shoemakers will even craft them to the perfect fit while you wait.

Food
The gastronomical pleasures of the Campania region are endless. For one, the Caprese salad originated just across the bay of Naples in Capri. This traditional dish is served in the colors of the Italian flag, with red tomatoes, milky white fresh mozzarella cheese, and green basil leaves. A little salt on top and olive oil drizzled over it, and there you have a little bit of heaven on a plate.
Pizza originated in the region as well, and the local pizzas have thick crusts, a delectable layer of fresh tomato, and heaps of the local fresh mozzarella cheese, cooked until just browned on the top with the crust still soft.
Along the state thoroughfare leading from Naples to the Amalfi Coast, the town of Agerola lies just a few kilometers before Positano, and is loaded with small factories which produce fresh mozzarella cheese (locally known as the oro bianco or white gold). Highly recommended are the delectable balls of fior di latte weighing in at one pound each made by the Azienda Agricola Naclerio.
Not to be forgotten are the delicious pastries of the region. Sfogiatelle, lobster tails, Neapolitans, the list goes on and on. In short, this is not a region to be counting calories in. But if you must, bear in mind that all the walking up and down steps should cancel out quite a few!

Artisans:
Aside from clothing and shoes, this region is especially well known for its ceramics. Here you will find everything from charms for necklaces to giant chandeliers made out of colorful ceramic and decorated by hand by skilled artisans. The prices, patterns, and styles vary from town to town and from shop to shop. While still pretty, some of the patterns you find in many of the shops have become overly repetitive and commercial. If you take a close look and compare the products in a few shops, it should be evident which ones are hand painted originals and which are mass-produced by machine.
At a shop named Anfora, the artists can still be found hand decorating their work at any given time. Their lab and showroom is located in the town of Vietri Sul Mare along the Corso Umberto, 32.
